The months from October through to March and April see the time when the caterpillars descend from the cocoon nests and they will then form "processions" in search of soft, warm earth in which to pupate. There can be hundreds of caterpillars nose to tail, winding along roadways, paths, grass, whatever. The caterpillars have poisonous and irritant brittle hairs on their bodies, and are a mottled dull brown with faded yellowish splotches.
Symptoms Initial symptoms to watch out for in your pet may include vomiting and tongue swelling. Disposal of Procession caterpillars These are most vulnerable whilst still in their silvery nests high up in the pine trees, so this is the best time to dispose of them. Wearing eye protection, gloves, and covering as much skin as possible, cut them out of the tree, put in a plastic bag and throw in a bin. Knocking them out of the tree is dangerous, as the hairs on their back can fly around in the air and settle on the ground, where they can be picked up by animlas and burning is not advisable unless you have a hot fire going which can incinerate the branches immediately. Lighting a bonfire containing the nests still gives the opportunity for hairs to fly into the air. Once the caterpillars are on the ground they are very dangerous as everywhere they walk they are leaving trails which are enough to kill a dog or cat, so the best advice is to avoid areas where they are active if you have animals. March update: Following the posting of the article we have received several emails giving the following advice; Spray nests or caterpillars on the ground with hair spray- this will stop the hairs flying off when handled. Spray caterpillars on the floor first with hair spray, then with insect spray, or fly spray which will kill them. Using gloves, pick up and put in a plastic bag and throw away. Do NOT touch with bare hands , use disposable gloves, and definately do not use cotton gloves.
