The Government Delegate's office released information yesterday to the effect that Guardia Civil have arrested five people, under charges of carrying out a wave of robberies in the area of El Vivero, in La Manga del Mar Menor.
The five arrested are all Spanish nationals, from the Cartagena area, and are accused of carrying out a number of attacks during the night, breaking into houses, boats and beach bars.
All of the robberies were carried out during a short period of time, un-nerving local residents, and police initiated investigations under the code name of Operation Carena at the end of June, focusing their attention on a group of ethnic gypsies who were camped in the immediate area where the robberies were taking place.
Police were able to successfully identify the perpetrators of the crimes, as following the night-time break-ins the individuals arrested then sold the items in second hand shops the next day, obtaining what police describe as a " significant quantity of money" from the goods stolen. Most of the stolen goods have been returned to their owners and the accused charged in Court number 3 in Cartagena.
