In spite of the lack of confirmed investors, Alhama de Murcia council have confirmed that all studies have been completed which will allow construction of the access roads for the Paramount theme park to begin this autumn.
The new roads have been authorized by the Dirección General de Carreteras with a construction budget of over 4 million euros, and the work is due to be completed before the theme and leisure park itself is built, according to a statement issued by the Town Hall of Alhama de Murcia.
The viability study for the access roads will provide a solution for the traffic generated by the new macro-complex: a new access road from the RM-2 motorway will be built, and the existing flyover will be improved. At the moment there is a double roundabout which will be converted into just one, linking the entry and exit roads joining the motorway. This viability study will be incorporated into the Special Plan which is being
designed for the implantation of the theme park, and once the urbanization and environmental paperwork is completed the finished document will make it possible for the project’s building licence to be granted. The document will also include a study of the other elements which might affect traffic, as well as road, rail and air links.
The Town Hall explains in the statement issued that the large number of expected visitors expected makes it necessary to modify access roads in order to increase their capacity. Preliminary calculations that suggest that there will be an average of 8,252 trips per day to the Paramount Park and 12,771 to the Life Style Center, where the shops and cultural attractions will be housed. These trips will use the access roads from Murcia and Cartagena.
Another study has been made into future parking requirements. The plans are for 5,571 visitor parking spaces at the Paramount Park and 188 for employees, as well as 195 heavy vehicles and 263 buses and coaches. At the Life Style Center it is anticipated that there will be spaces for 4,429 vehicles, 11 coaches and 75 heavy vehicles.
Construction work on the park is scheduled for Autumn 2012.
Financing is still being sought to finance the project, and to date, no official decision has been made public as to whether the Region of Murcia has agreed to guarantee a loan to Premursa to continue with their work to seek investment for construction to begin in the park.
