Murcia is often referred to as one of Spain's best kept secrets, having largely escaped the frenetic building boom which resulted in so many of Spain's coastlines disappearing beneath a blanket of white concrete, yet having a good selection of practical urbanisations and options for ex-pats looking to relocate or buy a second home.
Murcia boasts a wide range of natural conditions, and differing climates, with the wild pine clad mountains of the North and North-west Murcia enjoying cooler winters, Central Murcia with green river valleys, the Mar Menor, Europe´s largest salt water lake known as the sea of health a mecca for watersports, with a warm, healthy climate and the coastal areas of South West Murcia enjoying virtually frost free climates and summer breezes, Murcia being the sunniest region on the Spanish mainland.
The Region of Murcia has long been a highly popular destination for Spanish holidaymakers, but has escaped the high rise developments of some Spanish tourist destinations, much of the coastal properties being apartments and villas within close proximity of the beach, in family resorts.
La Manga is the only area with anything approaching even medium density, as although the La Manga Strip is fairly tightly packed with villas and apartment blocks, the mainland coastline of the Mar Menor is fringed with pockets of development offering residential duplexes in established environments, localised apartment developments and more established urbanisations, but split by areas of preserved parklands and natural, unspoilt areas.
Murcia is still an essentially Spanish Region, peppered with mediaeval hilltop towns, offering amazingly cheap town properties, most of which require modernisation, but offer the chance to still live within a Spanish community.
And the region is also known as the vegetable basket of Spain, it's all year round warm climate supporting a strong agricultural tradition, the region blanketed in citrus groves and farming villages, offering many rustic property options, for those looking for a more rural retreat, yet with proximity to the sea, warm climate, good connections in the form of the current San Javier airport and the imminent opening of the new Corvera International Airport.
And finally, residential tourism urbanisations, with several good residential urbanisations offering secure, established expat communities, many with 
world-level golf courses and top level facilities : La Manga Club, Hacienda del Álamo Golf Resort, Camposol, La Torre, Condado de Alhama, Mar Menor Resort, Hacienda Riquelme, etc
