The Town Hall of Mazarrón, struggling to balance the books after recording a loss last year of over 650,000 euros on the municipal waste collection services, have just approved the budget of the municipal company “Bahía de Mazarrón Ingeniería Urbana 2007, SLU” for 2012, which comes to 2,838,000 euros.
Mayor Ginés Campillo explained that last year’s losses were due in large part to the number of unpaid invoices left by the previous PP administration before the local elections in May 2011, and claims that since the coalition which he leads came to power in the municipality the quality of management has been improving.
The aim, he says, is to achieve the best results possible using the human and financial resources available.
Sr Campillo says that over the last twelve months the council has "exerted more control" over the street cleaning and hygiene company, and as well as the service offered to the public being improved this has meant that their accounts are now beginning to return to the black.
220 new rubbish containers have been purchased, and the Mayor says that they will start to be installed at the beginning of July in Puerto de Mazarrón, Bolnuevo and El Alamillo. These investments in fixed assets have been included in the budget recently passed by the Town Hall, as have the acquisitions of a new street cleaning machine and a quad bike, which have been in full service since April.
He is also pleased to announce that the rather acrimonious handover involving the transfer of the waste collection is now starting to sort itself out as there are now 2 representatives from the council on the board of the municipal "waste control business." These measures have started to take effect now that all members of the council are attending the meetings dealing with this issue, rather than one member of the ex municipal government (allegedly) boycotting the relevant meetings, or being unable to attend, always preventing resolution of the conflicts which existed.
Allegations that this was done deliberately have been dismissed as a load of old rubbish by the opposition.
