Cartagena Police on taxi driver crackdown.

The Policia Local are checking documentation and vehicle safety.

The Policía Local in Cartagena are checking up on the municipality’s taxis between now and 27th June, reviewing their licences, fire extinguishers, cleanliness, documentation and fare calculations, as well as ensuring that they are not in breach of any traffic regulations.
The reason given for the checks is to make sure taxi drivers are aware of the need to drive responsibly and correctly, respecting the highway code, and to maintain their vehicles in perfect condition.

In order to avoid inconveniencing the taxi drivers more than necessary and depriving them of possible fares, the checks will be carried out at taxi ranks throughout the city.

That´s the official reason.

The unofficial reason is that taxi drivers have been complaining bitterly about illegal taxi drivers and casual drivers picking up fares, and complaining that not enough is being done to deal with the problem.
