We live in a world of whitewashed modernity with few traces of real Spain remaining along a developed coast.
Those special restaurants with stunning views across the glittering Mediterranean sea, atmospheric terraces with summer shade, giving privacy set amidst the rustling leaves of cooling vegetation, leading into historical buildings, carefully refurbished to create a real Spanish atmosphere and serving honest food, lovingly prepared by multinational staff using fish delivered twice daily fresh from the fishing boats are few and far between.
But if that's what you want, it's still here, and you can find it alive and kicking at the Antipodas tavern in the little fishing village of La Azohia, near to Mazarron.
The Tavern itself has a colourful history, once the original church in the local fishing community, and in its' time a schoolhouse, fishermans store and even a dive centre, it underwent a complete modernization in 2009, the resulting Taverna presenting a colourful, welcoming and eclectic environment.
The Taverna is open from 11am daily, offering a warm welcome throughout the year to those seeking a bit of homemade cake and a coffee, a well-priced and beautifully cooked menu del dia, or a superb A la Carte meal with the best views of a Spanish summer sunset imaginable.
You'll find the staff live up to the environment as well, with staff from Spain, Ireland, Scotland, England , Holland, Italy, Romania and France, an eclectic mix which reflects in the diversity of the meals on offer, with locally sourced, and home-made ingredients constantly delighting those seeking honest food with no
artificial ingredients, flavours or colours.
Because fish comes in fresh from the bay, some of the dishes feature ingredients which have been enjoyed along this stretch of coast since Phoenician times, and you'll find ingredients on offer here which are unique to this area, although the restaurant also serves a wide range of traditional, well-loved home-made dishes.
It's also a great stop-off point for those planning a visit to the popular Castillitos and El Jorel batteries at the Cabo Tinoso gun emplacements which are just a short drive away.
The historical batteries still hold two massive Vickers 381mm anti-shipping guns, capable of firing a projectile weighing a ton more than 35 km, and three 152.mm guns, as well as being an architecturally stimulating and interesting place to visit.
Click here for a full report, and next time you take the visitors off for an exciting morning out, why not finish off the morning with a great value menu del dia to follow.
During the winter months, a 4 course menu del dia is only 10 euros, or you could try a taster menu of 6 courses for only 18 euros if you'd really like to get a sense of murcian regional produce.
And if it's a special occasion, why not try the 28 euro taster menu, which includes a regional wine tasting menu as well.
The menu del dias are only served Monday-Friday between 1pm and 4.30pm, and the taster menus are available from Sunday-Thursday.
The Taverna also offers special childrens meals and a beautiful A la Carte menu, with varied and innovative salads, fresh fish and meat dishes, as well as a well stocked bar with regional and international wines, although they're also a dab hand at the sumptuous cocktails which make Spanish summer sunsets such a special occasion.
The kitchen opens every day from 1-4:30 and 7-11 in the winter, and until much, much later in the summer!
