This weekend Caravaca de la Cruz hosts its monthly Mercadillo del Peregrino in the atmospheric setting of Plaza del Arco, at the entrance to the old quarter.
For visitors who are new to Caravaca, walking through this arch is like stepping back in time, walking from the sprawling , modern world which clusters around the foot of the outcrop on which the old quarter sits, to the historic quarter, a different world inside the arch which leads to the historic Plaza and the city of the Cross of Caravaca.
The artesan stalls sell a full range of artesan products ranging from food to cosmetics, jewellery and bits and bobs for the house.
The artesan market is open from 10am to 2.30pm.
This month the special theme is the International day of the planet, and workshops will be available to teach the youngsters how to make something out of nothing, as well as be suitably entertained. There will be other themed activities going on in the marketplace at the same time.
If you´re planning to have lunch in Caravaca and want to try real murcian cooking, several of the restaurants are offering what´s called a plato tipico , a typical dish of the city. This month the restaurants are offering Asado de Cordero Segureño, a slowly roasted lamb dish, which is on offer for 12 euros, with Vat included. This can be obtained at the following restaurants : the tourist office will be happy to supply a map.
Restaurante Paladar.
Restaurante Rincón de Paco.
Restaurante Pedro Marín.
Restaurante El Arco.
If you´ve not been to Caravaca before, have a look at the info about Caravaca, particularly the parking recommendations, as access to the old quarter is blocked off during these artesan days, so visitors need to park in one of the other parking zones.
